The word 'Uptime' has different meaning depending on the situation in which it is used. In this case, 'Uptime' referes to the time from which a device, like a computer, was last booted. When the device is rebooted, shut down or crashed, it "looses" it's uptime, and has to start all over from zero uptime again.
Uptime in this sence is most common within the UNIX and Linux communities, but most computer- and network-related devices keeps track on how long they have been running since last reboot. Why keep track of it? To keep track of uptimes for a system can be done for many reasons. For example, some people keep track of their uptime just because they find it interesting to see long their systems can run without failing. Others use uptime to keep track of how well a system is doing, and to have an early detection of hard- or software that is starting to fail.
The reason for the Uptime Project is to try and keep track of the uptime of many different systems, spread out all over the world. This in an attempt to generate interesting statistics and information on how well different systems are doing in regard of uptime. Note however, that uptime does not necessarily represent the stability or availability of a certain type of system, this since there are many reasons to reboot a machine without it crashing or needing to be rebooted to continue running it's services. It does however provide an interesting view on the subject. How it The Uptime Project consist of three parts, one tiny client that runs on each host that take part of the project, and sends information about it's uptime to the project. The second part is a central database-server that collects and stores updates from all participating hosts, and the third part which is this website, where statistics can be viewed, and users can administrate their accounts and add new hosts.
